Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, so she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. When she was a little girl, she struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety due to the word"association. Ford was interested in the profession of acting in her teens and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one month, she decided that it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford made an application for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford did not graduate in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance on the show Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. In addition to her regular stage work, Tate was a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate gained recognition for her stand-up comedy, which was added to her portfolio in 1996.
